Dean Conchita Torres-Maceda

DEAN CONCHITA TORRES-MACEDA, for 19 years, has steered the Uni¬versity of Santo Tomas College of Nursing towards greater heights, making the College a center for excellence in the field of nursing, a recognition granted by the Commission on Higher Education.

Dean Maceda graduated cum laude at the UST College of Nursing in 1953 and was a recipient of the Rector's Gold Medal for Excellence. Afterwards, she went on a fellowship to the France Payne Bolton School of Nursing where she underwent intensive and extensive training in Public Health Nursing. The feollowship was followed by years of continuous study and training. Later on, she pursued her Master's Degree in Nursing and was able to earn the degree in 1971.

She was appointed Dean of the College of Nursing in 1976. Under her leadership, the College was able to design and evolve a curriculum that trains future nurses not only to be competent professionals but nurses with a keen sense of social awareness. This curricular change gave birth to the HASIK project in Tondo, Manila organized in 1981, which was later adopted as the University Outreach community development project involving various colleges and faculties. Her other achievements include the establishment of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Research Fund, the Nursing Development Trust Fund and the construction, renovation and improvement of the Faculty Room, Chemistry laboratory and Computer Room.

Through her efforts, the College of Nursing earned a level II accreditation. And having the most number of Board Topnotchers, it was cited as the School of Nursing in 1991.
