Dr. Ma. Luisa Pimentel Ejercito

The First Lady of the Philippines, Dr. Ma. Luisa Pimentel Ejercito, is a graduate of the College of Liberal Arts (Associate in Arts - Pre-Medicine) and of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (Doctor of Medicine) of the University of Santo Tomas.

Her field of specialization in Medicine is Psychiatry and trained in that specialty at the Royal Park Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, under the renown Dr. John Cade and Dr. Cunningham Dax.

She practised Psychiatry at the National Center for Mental Health (formerly the National Mental Hospital).

Dr. Ejercito's choice of Psychiatry and her first exposure to mental patients, the greater majority of whom were either indigents or marginalized and abandoned by their own, was actually the beginning of a life-long commitment to the cause of the underprivileged. In her spare time she has held free medical consultation at the San Martin de Porres Medical Hospital of the Dominican Fathers in San Juan. And when her husband, Joseph Ejercito Estrada, entered politics, her limited community service gained a much wider base, first the municipality of San Juan and then the whole country. This takes the form principally of medical missions to various parts of the country, specially the forgotten areas. She has also institutionalized this service to the underprivileged with the establishment of the Erap Para sa Mahirap Foundation which provides scholarships to needy students, the Erap Para sa Mahirap Partnerships for the Poor which address the various basic concerns of the community, like water, medical service, livelihood, and street children program.
