Gloria de Castro Bernas Ph.D.

As an academician and biochemist, Dr. Gloria de Castro Bernas acknowledges the importance of research as shown by the number of researches she has done. A good number of which are related to cancer because her research interests are on the biological evaluation of natural products with potential anti¬cancer activity, screening for potential transducers of the cell signaling pathways and the development/immunocytochemical screening of tumor markers.

She has been a recipient of numerous awards and grants. She is currently the holder of the Dr. Jose Lugay Professorial Chair in Chemistry. She was named as an Outstanding Alumni in the Field of Science and Technology by the UST Graduate School. She also received the Natatanging Guro Award given by the UST Research Center. For her being a prolific researcher, she has twice been awarded the Gold Series Award by the University of Santo Tomas.

Dr. Bernas has also gained recognition outside the University. Just to mention a few: she received from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) the Grupo Medica Award for her research paper in herbal medicine and as adviser for the Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis in Chemistry. The Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science, Inc. (PHILAAS) gave her the Gregorio Y. Zara Award in Basic Science.

Dean Gloria Bernas gradu¬ated from the College of Science of the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree and pursued her graduate studies in the same university. She finished her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of the Philippines.
