Ophelia Alcantara-Dimalanta, Ph.D.

Well-respected literary critic Isagani R. Cruz once described Dr. Ophelia Dimalanta as "the archetypal poet's poet, carefully harness-ing the resources of spontaneous youth while carefreely indulging the discipline of contemplative maturity." Her passion for literature is not only manifested in her works but also in the generous sharing of her literary skills and experiences with her students, some of whom became significant men and women of letters as well.

Dimalanta's poems are considered guideposts in the development of Philippine poetry in English. Her works, widely published here and abroad, have been translated into Russian, Japanese and Italian. As one of the most influential figures in Philippine literature, she has also gained the respect and admiration of local and foreign literary organizations.

Her long list of laurels include the Southeast Asian Writer (SEAWRITE) of the Year Award, Philippine National Fellow for Poetry, Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas, State University of Iowa's Best Poetry Award for the poem Montage, Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature, and the National Catholic Authors Award, to name a few.

Formerly Dean of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters, Dimalanta now holds the post as Director of the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies, a department that fosters excellence in literary writing and studies. A much sought-after literary educator and lecturer, she is also a noted critic and panelist for the country's top writers workshops.
