President Diosdado Macapagal

Dr. Diosdado Macapagal, the fifth president of the Republic of the Philippines, obtained his bachelor's masteral and doctoral (D.C.L., meritissimus, 1947) in Law, as well as his Ph.D. in Economics (1957) from the University of Santo Tomas. He placed number one in the Bar examination of 1936.

His notable service to the government included - Member, House of Representatives, 1949-1953 and 1953-1957 where he served in the Committee of Foreign Affairs and as delegate to the United Nations, Laurel Economic Mission to the United States, Japanese Peace Treaty and U.S.-R.P. Mutual Defense Treaty. He became President, 1971 Constitutional Convention; Vice President of the Philippines, 1957-1961; President, Liberal Party, 1958-1961. As a law practitioner and legal sfcholar he was Assistant Attorney, Feria & Lao Law offices, 1937; Assistant Attorney, Ross, Lawrence, Selph & Carrascoso (American Law Firm), 1937-1940; Senior Partner, Macapagal, Punsalan, Yabut & Eusebio Law offices, 1946-1949 and 1954-1957; Founder and first President, Philippine Lawyers Association, 1946-1949; Professor of Law, UST, 1941-1957; University Professor, Univer¬sity of the East, 1968-1971. Presently, he is a University professor and holder of the professorial chair on Constitutional Democracy at the University of Santo Tomas.
Dr. Macapagal earned for himself distinguished awards and decorations from the government of Spain, Vatican, Italy, Malta, Pakistan, Liberia, Tanzania, Madagascar, Republic of China, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and South Korea. His most significant awards included Grand Prize of 1986 International Year of Peace Award, World Peace Award, UST Golden Cross Award, Salute to a Statesman Resolution, Father of Land Reform, Ama ng Bayan Fr. Silvestre Sancho Award, 1990 Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas, "Lakas nang Amanung Capampangan, Most Outstanding Filipino Award, Exemplary Ambassador of Goodwill Extraordinaire, Most Outstanding UST Law Alumnus, Medal of Emerald, Korea and the 1992 Outstanding Senior Citizen Achiever of the Philippines.
